The Procedure
Dealing with cancer is an incredible physical and emotional challenge. Cancer that takes away one's secure feelings about her femininity and sexuality makes the experience even more difficult. Thanks to technological advances in surgery and science, women who undergo a mastectomy can have a new breast made either from an implant or their own (autologous) tissue.
Whether performed immediately following a mastectomy or at a later time, breast reconstruction can dramatically improve a woman's appearance, self-confidence, and quality of life. Studies show that immediate reconstruction does not delay post-operative chemotherapy, prolong recovery, or hinder the diagnosis of local cancer recurrence.
Breast Reconstruction Resources
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has put together a listing of resources for people with breast cancer, including treatment options and legislative initiatives. The resources on this page include links to letters from patients who have had breast reconstruction following mastectomy, a variety of ASPS/PSEF publications about breast cancer and breast reconstruction and a list of links to other online breast cancer support organizations.
